Apply your skin in 90 seconds

No tools beyond what is in the packet. Read this once before you peel anything.

The process

Six steps

  1. Clean the phone

Take off your case. Wipe the back and sides with the alcohol wipe in the packet, then dry with the lint cloth. Dust and finger oil are the only real cause of bubbles — spend thirty seconds here and the rest is easy.

  2. Dry-fit before you peel

Hold the skin over the back of the phone, backing still on, and line the camera cutout up with the camera. Note which way round it sits. Do this once and you will not have to guess with adhesive exposed.

  3. Peel and anchor the top

Peel about a third of the backing. Lay the camera cutout down first and let it register around the camera ring — that is your anchor point. Do not press the rest down yet.

  4. Lay it down in one sweep

Holding the free end slightly raised, sweep down the back with a finger or the squeegee card from the centre outwards. Pull the backing away as you go rather than all at once, so the vinyl meets the glass progressively instead of slapping down.

  5. Work the curved edges

Press the side edges down with your thumb, working along the length of the phone. On phones with a pronounced curve, thirty seconds of gentle warmth from a hairdryer on low makes the vinyl relax into the curve. Warm, not hot — you should be able to hold the phone comfortably.

  6. Let it cure

Press around every cutout and edge one more time and leave it alone for a few hours. The adhesive reaches full strength in about 24 hours. Avoid putting a tight case over it or going swimming with it on day one.

If something goes wrong

Quick fixes

A bubble

Lift the nearest edge, peel back to just past the bubble and lay it down again with the squeegee. Vinyl tolerates being lifted and re-laid several times — it is not a screen protector.

Slightly off-centre

Peel it off slowly and start again from step 3. As long as you have not stretched it, the adhesive re-seats fine.

An edge lifting

Warm that edge briefly with a hairdryer on low and press it down for ten seconds. Edges lift when the vinyl was stretched to reach, so let it relax rather than pulling it.

Taking it off later

Warm one corner, lift it with a fingernail and pull slowly at a shallow angle along the phone, not upwards. It comes away in one piece and leaves no residue.
